Books have been getting banned or challenged as many would say for a very long time. It seems that in every book that has social issues expressed in it gets banned. Us as kids see and hear lots of things we shouldn't hear but no one bans cellphones use and we can find even more disturbing things on a cellphone. In the book "The Giver" by Lois Lowry deals with a life of plainness and a life where poverty, murder and crime is the past. Although the story the giver deals with sexuality and plainness it should not get banned from our libraries because we are mature kids and we all know that he issues the characters in the book go through we go through the same things.
Many parents argue about banning The Giver all the time because of its gruesome scenes and sexual references. One parent from Franklin county kansas argued that the giver has to much gruesome scenes" I chose the side of challenging because of themes of murder and Degradation of a mother". I do understand why the parent might want to challenge the book but even though it deals with these factors it isn't worse than stuff you find on the internet. That makes up for one of the reasons it should not get banned.
Lots of parents still say that books should get banned in schools i think not. " Parents hate seeing their kids read explicit graphic scenes because they say it messes with their minds how does it do that if the cellphones you buy your children always have even more disgusting things". I may seem weird that parents think their kids are angels but those are parents for you and i believe that they should loosen up on us children.
Although many people say The Giver is a bad influence on us and that it should get banned from our libraries i kinda agree because there are some real sexual parts in this book that are too graphic, However it also talks about how a child stands up not only for himself but for others and disobeys the communities orders and runs away with his brother before his brother gets released or killed. This may help kids with low self esteem stand up and fight instead of crying and staying quiet.
To bring this to a close, they should not ban the giver because kids should be able to read what they want. Basically what im trying to say is that you people that banned books have no rights because we have a choice to.Hopefully a change is made.
